In the recent years, career choices among the youths of the nation have seen many shifts – natural ones and weird ones. Among the most natural ones, the disenchantment from the engineering career is easily evident. Apparently, people have been engineers for long and also been jobless for so long and this is the reason that today, most of the youths who are willing to establish themselves, in the long run, are not getting into this field. So, where are they looking? What are their goals? To the extent I could watch the shift, I will certainly say that people are looking towards a career which is safer, far more challenging and assured in the terms of progress – journalism!
Journalism has many facets and it lets the aspirants have a different course if they want to – just like engineering. However, the best part of journalism is the launch phase. Unlike engineering, the freshers in journalism don’t have to struggle too much. They get the jobs easily and they get it comfortably with a better salary too often compared to the students who are freshers with engineering degrees. The power of content, after all!
It was coming. It’s nothing like that journalism has usurped the rights of engineering in a day or two. It has been a gradual process and it is the eventual result of those twists and turns. More than half a million engineers are almost produced every year in India and who will accommodate them all in the terms of jobs? And you will also notice that most of the modern start-ups are based on content and not on machinery and hence, they need people who can create content for them without the need of operating powerful machines.
Broadcast journalism, the most favoured one when it comes to the career choices, has its own glamour when we talk of it. Who does not want to be on the TV when people likely have their dinners? Other courses are print journalism, digital journalism (electronic media) and various others which I don’t even know in details. Yes, there are lesser streams than the engineering varieties but certainly, there are more opportunities than that. If you are also making your career choice, be careful and be wise.
